My cat has been walking around yelling. What is she trying to tell me?

You have worked with me and my cat for years. She has had many health issues, but this week instead of being ill, she got sprayed by a skunk. The University here in Missouri gave me a recipe that got rid of most of the stench (hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and a little gentle shampoo). She’s been walking around yelling now and I’m concerned. What is she trying to tell me? Am I missing something?
My Intuitive Answer
This dear cat is getting old and has certainly had more than her share of physical issues (and a few emotional ones). I’m so sorry about the skunk encounter. I’ve been fortunate over the years that my cats have managed to avoid skunks even though we see them in our yard on occasion. My four older cats (girls) are all indoor cats now (one blind at age 19 who is doing well), but my two boys (Patch with only one eye and Hardy who has serious thyroid disease) still go out on occasion. Even the boys seem to stay away from the skunks. Patch seems to hang around with the deer and even the opossums – he’s quite curious.
Back to your cat: She’s an old girl, and she’s getting more senile now. I don’t believe that she’s in pain, but she does get confused and feel quite out of touch with her physical body sometimes. Try rubbing her back and down her legs to help ground her. When she yells, just go to her when you can, and tell her you understand that she’s confused. You’ve always given her extra attention and that may be all you can do at this time.

This month I’d like to suggest you read or reread a wonderful little book written by my friend Patty Summers. Patty is an internationally known professional animal communicator who has been a frequent guest on my weekly radio show and will return on April 18th (see the Spirits Evolving website for information on the show and archived shows). Her book is entitled Talking With The Animals and it is filled with her personal experiences with animals of all kinds from dogs and cats to birds and reptiles. Her abilities are great and her interest in the well being of all animals is deep. She also teaches workshops to help humans better understand their animal companions. For more information, visit her website at www.psanimal.com.
The quote on the back cover of her book from Pawnee tribe chief Leetakots-Lesa says much: “In the beginning of all things, wisdom and knowledge were with the animals; for Tirawa, The One Above, did not speak directly to man. He sent animals to tell man that He showed Himself through the beasts, and that from the stars, and the sun, and the moon, man should learn… for all things speak of the Tirawa.”
